As the Head of Factual at ABC TV, Steve oversees a small team responsible for the development, commissioning, production, budgeting and delivery of all external and internal factual programming for all platforms. Steve has commissioned a raft of titles including War on Waste, Stargazing Live, Anh’s Brush with Fame, Ask the Doctor, the Logie award winning Conviction, Ice Wars, Keeping Australia Alive, Brian Cox: Life of a Universe, Housemates and Bullied as well as overseeing the revamp of the science brand, Catalyst.

What ABC Factual is looking for in Pitches:

ABC Factual commissions programming for ABC main channel, ABC2 and iview across the following genres: contemporary social issues, crime, science, campaigns, formats, politics, religion and ethics, natural history and history.

We’re looking for ambitious stories that matter to all Australians today: contemporary stories that are accessible and grab the attention of a broad audience. Please be ambitious in your proposals and think about scale, innovation and how you can play with form to deliver something we haven’t seen before.

Above all, exceptional storytelling, strong directing and solid journalism are paramount. ABC TV is the home of the best Australian stories told by the best Australian storytellers. We encourage you to be bold in your storytelling. Relevant, contemporary, challenging, compelling, distinctive and thought provoking. Our programs must inspire and have a reason to exist right now. Embrace complexity and find a way to bring your story to life in surprising ways.

Our broadcast slots on the main channel are mostly 8pm on Tuesdays for 30 minutes, 8.30pm on Tuesdays for one hour and Sunday nights at 7.40pm for one hour. The main channel target is a very broad demographic. For iveiw originals, we are after short form, multiple part series that appeal to the 18 to 34 demographic.
