A Room Without A View: Surviving the Writers Room

Conference Halls 1 & 2, Level 2

“Writers aren’t people exactly. Or, if they’re any good, they’re a whole lot of people trying so hard to be one person.”

– F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Last Tycoon

Fitzgerald spent his last years in Hollywood, drying out, trying to salvage his faded fortune and self-worth writing for MGM and others. He failed.

Today he would be earning a million an episode as a showrunner for Netflix.

The screen world has finally elevated the role of the writer to its natural apex and Australia is producing an electric range of scribes that are rewriting the talking pictures rules. We present Luke Davies, Andrew Knight, Kris Wyld and Vicki Madden, who have edited these boundaries and triumphed in the war of art vs commerce.

So draw your chair up close to the edge of the precipice and let them tell you a few stories.
